In my opinion, one of the hardest things to accept is a new type of medical treatment, particularly when it changes the philosophy, parameters and overall results that we are expecting and basically used to receiving. Stem cells are undoubtedly, no exception to this rule.
About 6 weeks ago, Eduardo K (a Cuban doctor with a master’s degree from the University of Pittsburg in internal medicine and nephrology), brought his wife Maria to our institute, in order to assess the possibility of using stem cells to cure the severe chronic pain in her ankle. A pain so severe, that it was basically hindering her ability to walk and Dr. K also expressed his extreme hesitation & concerns about having his wife be involved in an invasive ankle surgery at this stage of her adult life.

Approximately 15 years ago, I became one of the first doctors to graduate as a Specialist in Pain Management through the American Academy of Medical Specialties in the USA. To achieve this, I had to thoroughly train in all known techniques to control pain and also undergo an extensive national theoretical and practical examination.
Pain management is an important focal part of my professional life, that is to say, “my daily bread” (since it is my specialty) and being in this demanding field has brought me tremendous challenges that I have had to overcome and I continue to face new demanding challenges with my patients every day in our institute. Pain deteriorates a person progressively, not only physically, but also psychologically, until all hope and level of self-esteem is basically lost. Afterwards, the person is continuously transformed into someone totally unknown and that will eventually learn to accept any type of treatment, regardless of its consequences or possible level of complications.

The concept of aging varies from individual to individual. Different theories have emerged over the last 100 years seeking to explain it, with Max Rubner first theorizing about a “vital substance” that suggested why an animal as big as an elephant lives more than a small mouse. Sixty years later, Leonard Hayflick concluded that a cell’s genetic program would “deplete” after a certain number of divisions, that is, the cell would “die” after dividing about 50 times. Today, this interesting phenomenon is known as “Hayflick’s Limit” and reminds us of our mortality.
Nowadays, there are new concepts in regards to cellular aging. In particular, Stem Cells have become the focus of several interesting theories hoping to explain it. An organism ages not because of the amount of damage that arises in its tissues, but because of the inability of our own Stem Cells to regenerate and rebuild these tissues.

Recently, I read a very interesting article about fibromyalgia and I would like to discuss a bit further about this terrible illness and how Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell treatments can greatly help patients that suffer from this particular medical condition.
Consistent with what was mentioned in this article, fibromyalgia involves a group of symptoms in which generalized pain is predominant and the patients tend to experience pain in multiple areas of their bodies simultaneously, often also accompanied by constant fatigue and even symptoms of depression.
