What Are Stem Cells?

Stem cells are part of the body’s natural system for growth, repair, and renewal.

Before your body had bones, joints, muscles, or organs, it began with cells that could develop into specialized tissues and help shape the structures that make up the body. That is what makes stem cells so important in regenerative medicine.

When hip pain becomes chronic, the pain itself is only part of the picture. Changes may also be happening in and around the joint involving cartilage, inflammation, surrounding tissues, and overall hip function.

Instead of wondering:
“Do I have to keep planning my life around this pain?”
The better question is:
“What is causing my hip pain, and what could help me move more comfortably?”

What Could Be Causing Your Hip Pain

Hip pain can start inside the joint, in surrounding tissues, or in another area that refers pain to the hip.

Hip Osteoarthritis

Changes in joint cartilage that can cause pain and stiffness.

Labral Tears

Damage to the cartilage ring surrounding the hip socket.

Hip Impingement

Abnormal contact between the hip bones during movement.

Tendon or Bursa Irritation

Irritation in the soft tissues around the hip.

Osteonecrosis

Bone damage caused by reduced blood supply.

Referred Pain

Pain originating in the lower back or nearby structures.

Every condition requires a different approach. A physician evaluation and appropriate imaging help identify the cause and guide your treatment options.

For more than 17 years, Miami Stem Cell has followed the evolving science of regenerative medicine

Sports Medicine

2020

Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine

In a pilot study analyzing 16 patients with 18 treated hips, participants reported improvements in pain and hip function over six months after one bone marrow concentrate injection.

Study context:Small case series with no comparison group; the findings are preliminary.

PM&R

2018

PM&R

A prospective cohort of 19 patients covering 25 treated joints, including 15 hips, reported improved osteoarthritis symptom scores after bone marrow concentrate injections at an average follow-up of approximately 13 months.
Study context: Hip and knee outcomes were combined, there was no control group, and two patients later underwent hip replacement.

Medicine

2022

Journal of Regenerative Medicine

A retrospective study of 31 patients with hip osteoarthritis reported improvements in pain and hip function at six and twelve months after bone marrow aspirate injections.
Study context: Uncontrolled retrospective study using bone marrow aspirate rather than concentrated BMAC.
These studies provide early evidence, not proof of effectiveness. They do not establish the effectiveness of umbilical cord-derived products, exosomes, or regenerative treatment for every cause of hip pain.

Reported Benefits in Clinical Studies

Less Hip Pain 1, 3

Lower patient-reported pain scores at follow-up.

Better Hip Function 1, 3

Improved hip-specific function scores.

Easier Daily Movement 1

Better activities-of-daily-living scores.

Improved OA Symptom Scores 2

Improvement across pain, stiffness, and physical function measures.

Regenerative Options for Hip Pain

Umbilical Cord-Derived MSCs

Cell-based therapy studied for its potential role in inflammation, tissue signaling, and the biological environment surrounding the hip joint.

Exosomes

Tiny extracellular vesicles involved in cell-to-cell signaling. Their clinical applications and long-term outcomes remain under investigation.

BMAC Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate

A concentrate prepared from your own bone marrow containing cells, platelets, and signaling factors being studied for hip osteoarthritis.

PRP Platelet-Rich Plasma

A concentrated portion of your own blood containing platelets and growth factors that may support the body’s natural repair response.

A2M

A naturally occurring blood protein being studied for its potential role in protecting joint tissues from certain degradative enzymes.
The right approach depends on your hip condition, health history, previous treatments, and what your physician considers appropriate.

If back pain continues to limit your movement or daily life despite conservative care, regenerative options may be worth exploring.

Miami Stem Cell Is a Place of Hope

Hope for the person who is tired of living around their pain. Hope for someone who wants to stay active, travel, play with their grandchildren, or simply keep doing the things that make their life theirs. That is what drew me to regenerative medicine in the first place: the possibility of making a real difference in someone’s quality of life. But hope has to come with responsibility. It has to come with honesty, experience, quality, and a clear understanding of what is realistically possible for each patient.
That is what Miami Stem Cell is: a place for people who want to feel better, stay active, and keep living life on their terms, without pain becoming the thing that defines what they can and cannot do.

Frequently Asked Questions

Honest answers to the questions we hear most, before you ever step into the office.
Where do the stem cells come from?

Depending on the treatment being considered, options may involve cells from your own body, such as bone marrow, or biologic material derived from donated umbilical cord tissue. Your physician should explain exactly what is being used and why.

That depends on your diagnosis, severity of joint changes, overall health, what you have already tried, and what you want to get back to doing. The physician evaluates those factors before making a recommendation.

Patients commonly seek evaluation for hip osteoarthritis, chronic hip pain, cartilage wear, degenerative joint changes, and symptoms that have continued despite conservative treatment.

It varies from patient to patient. Both published research and our experience with patients show that improvements can continue for months after treatment, with some studies reporting benefits through 12 months and beyond.

Many of our patients return to everyday activity relatively quickly, while golf, pickleball, running, or more demanding exercise may require a more gradual return. Your physician will guide you based on your hip and the treatment performed.

Some of our patients are treated once, while others may benefit from additional care over time. It depends on the condition of your hip, how you respond, and what your physician recommends.

Stem cell therapy for hip osteoarthritis is considered an emerging area of medicine and is not currently FDA-approved specifically for this use.

At Miami Stem Cell, we believe patients deserve a clear understanding of both the science and the regulatory status of the treatments they’re considering, without hype, pressure, or unrealistic promises.

Our role is to help you understand what the research shows, what options may be appropriate for your hip, and what you can realistically expect.

For some patients, regenerative medicine may be worth exploring before moving forward with hip replacement.

In published research and in our clinical experience, some patients have seen meaningful improvements in pain and function without immediately progressing to surgery.

Whether that is realistic for you depends on the condition of your hip, how advanced the joint changes are, your overall health, and your goals.
