What Are Stem Cells?

Stem cells are part of the body’s natural system for growth, repair, and renewal.

Before your body had bones, joints, muscles, or organs, it began with cells that could develop into specialized tissues and help shape the structures that make up the body.

That is what makes stem cells important in regenerative medicine. Different types have different capabilities, and researchers continue studying how they may be used in treatment. Learn more about stem cells.

When shoulder pain becomes persistent, the discomfort is only part of the picture. Changes may involve the tendons, cartilage, joint capsule, or surrounding tissues that help your arm move.

Instead of wondering:
“Do I have to keep avoiding the things I love because they make my shoulder hurt?”
The better question is:
“What’s causing it—and what could help me get back to what I love?”

What Could Be Causing Your Shoulder Pain?

Shoulder pain can begin in the joint or the tissues that help it move.

Rotator Cuff Injuries

Irritation or tears in the tendons that help lift and stabilize your arm.

Shoulder Arthritis

Changes in joint cartilage that can affect comfort and movement.

Frozen Shoulder

Tightening of the joint capsule that restricts movement.

Bursitis

Inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs that cushion surrounding tissues.

Shoulder Impingement

Pressure or irritation involving tendons and nearby tissues when lifting your arm.

Biceps Tendon Problems

Irritation or injury to a tendon at the front of the shoulder.

Every condition requires a different approach. A physical evaluation and appropriate imaging help identify the source of your pain and guide the next step. Learn about shoulder conditions.

For more than 17 years, Miami Stem Cell has followed the evolving science of regenerative medicine.

BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders

2024

Improved Pain and Shoulder Function

A randomized trial of 51 patients with selected rotator cuff tears found greater improvements in pain and function at three months with bone marrow concentrate combined with platelet products than with a home exercise program.

Arthroscopy

2020

Improvements Reported Through Two Years

In an exploratory study of 19 patients with partial-thickness rotator cuff tears, injections of patients’ own adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells were associated with improvements in shoulder pain and function over two years.

Scientific Reports

2023

Encouraging Longer-Term Shoulder Outcomes

Long-term follow-up of a small randomized trial found better combined shoulder pain-and-function scores at approximately 40 months with patients’ own adipose-derived regenerative cells than with a corticosteroid injection.
Small studies of specific treatments, which may differ from those offered here. Findings are preliminary; individual results vary.

Reported Benefits in Clinical Studies

Less Shoulder Pain

Reduced patient-reported pain scores.

Better Shoulder Function

Improved scores measuring shoulder use and everyday activity.

Improved Strength

Increased shoulder muscle strength in a small adipose-derived stem cell study.

Less Activity-Related Difficulty

Improved scores measuring arm and shoulder disability.

Benefits reported in the selected clinical studies above. Individual results may vary.

Regenerative Options for Shoulder Pain

Umbilical Cord-Derived MSCs

Donor-derived mesenchymal stromal cells being studied for their potential role in inflammation, tissue signaling, and repair. Evidence for shoulder treatment is still developing.

Exosomes

Tiny particles released by cells that carry biological signals. They are not stem cells, and their clinical use for shoulder conditions remains investigational.

BMAC Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate

Uses a concentrated preparation from your own bone marrow containing a mixture of cells, platelets, and other components.

PRP Platelet-Rich Plasma

Uses a concentrated portion of your own blood containing platelets and growth factors. Research has examined its use in selected shoulder tendon and joint conditions.

A2M — Alpha-2-Macroglobulin

A naturally occurring blood protein being studied for its role in limiting certain tissue-degrading enzymes. Shoulder-specific clinical evidence is limited.
The right approach depends on your shoulder, your health history, what you have already tried, and what your physician believes is appropriate.

Miami Stem Cell Is a Place of Hope

Hope for the person who is tired of living around their pain. Hope for someone who wants to stay active, travel, play with their grandchildren, or simply keep doing the things that make their life theirs.
That is what drew me to regenerative medicine in the first place: the possibility of making a real difference in someone’s quality of life.
But hope has to come with responsibility. It has to come with honesty, experience, quality, and a clear understanding of what is realistically possible for each patient.
That is what Miami Stem Cell is: a place for people who want to feel better, stay active, and keep living life on their terms, without pain becoming the thing that defines what they can and cannot do.

Frequently Asked Questions

Honest answers to the questions we hear most, before you ever step into the office.
Where do the stem cells come from?
The source depends on the proposed treatment. Bone marrow preparations come from your own body; umbilical cord-derived products come from donated tissue. Your physician should explain the exact source, contents, processing, and regulatory status of any proposed product. PRP and exosomes are not stem cells.
It starts with a physician evaluation. Your diagnosis, symptoms, imaging, overall health, previous treatment, and personal goals all help determine whether a regenerative option may be appropriate.
An evaluation may address rotator cuff problems, shoulder arthritis, frozen shoulder, bursitis, and other causes of discomfort. Your diagnosis determines the recommended approach—not every condition is suitable for regenerative treatment.
The duration varies with the condition, treatment, and individual response. Some studies have followed improvements for two years or longer, but those findings apply to specific preparations and selected patients—not a guaranteed timeline for everyone. View the two-year study.
Your physician will provide a recovery plan based on your shoulder and treatment. This may include temporary adjustments to lifting, overhead movement, or exercise, followed by a gradual return to activity.
There is no standard number for everyone. Your physician will discuss the proposed plan, how your response will be assessed, and whether additional treatment may be appropriate.
No. Stem cell products are not FDA-approved to treat shoulder pain, rotator cuff injuries, or shoulder arthritis. Exosome products are also not FDA-approved for these uses. Your physician should explain the regulatory status of any proposed treatment.
Some patients explore regenerative care as part of a nonsurgical treatment discussion, but no treatment can guarantee that surgery will be avoided. Certain tears, instability, or advanced joint damage may require surgical evaluation. The priority is the appropriate care for your shoulder. Learn about shoulder treatment options.
