Urinary Incontinence affects over 200 million people worldwide and while standard medical treatments often provide some symptomatic relief, most fail to target the underlying cause of the disease and/or abnormal condition. Urinary incontinence, also known as involuntary urination, is defined as any uncontrolled leakage of urine and it is an extremely common and distressing problem, which often poses a large impact on the quality of life of those who suffer with this highly bothersome and embarrassing medical condition.

The most common types of urinary incontinence “UI”, which usually affect women more than men are: “Stress UI” and “Urge UI” and patients with both problems are defined as having “Mixed” UI.

In many cases among post-menopausal women, estrogen production decreases and in some women urethral tissue will also demonstrate some atrophy with the tissue of the urethra becoming weaker and thinner. Stress urinary incontinence is caused by loss of support of the urethra which is usually a consequence of damage to pelvic support structures because of childbirth. This incontinence is often characterized by leakage of small amounts of urine with certain activities that increase abdominal pressure such as coughing, sneezing, and lifting of heavy objects. Daily urinary incontinence is reported by 9% to 39% of women over age 60. Increased risk of urinary incontinence was associated with pregnancy, childbirth, diabetes, and increased body mass index. 11% to 34% of older men also report urinary incontinence, with 2 to 11% reporting daily occurrences. Increased risk is associated with prostate surgery.

Additionally, it is believed that frequent exercise and high-impact activities may also cause “athletic incontinence” to develop. Urge urinary incontinence is caused by uninhibited contractions of the detrusor muscle and it is characterized by leaking of large amounts of urine in association with insufficient warning to get to the bathroom in time.

Over the past decade, Stem Cell / Plasma Rich Platelets (PRP) Therapies have shown tremendous promise for a variety of urologic disorders including applications in lower urinary tract dysfunction, ureteral and bladder trauma, urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction, and even certain renal diseases. In addition, numerous clinical trials using Stem Cell & PRP Treatments have reflected that such therapies can be effective, feasible and safe to perform. Furthermore, studies have also shown that bone marrow and adipose-derived stem cells have the capacity to provide a degree of regeneration of the urethral sphincter and improve recovery of the damaged pelvic nerves in certain patients.
Despite significant strides in the understanding of the underlying cause of these clinical conditions, current medical protocols & standard therapies remain lacking in their ability to target these fundamental mechanisms of injury or cause of disease. Currently, none of the traditional therapies focus on halting disease progression and/or reversing the existing physical injury.

On the other hand, new Regenerative Medicine concepts have emerged as an exciting means of fulfilling this therapeutic void by restoring and maintaining normal function via direct effects on injured or dysfunctional tissues. Multiple treatment avenues using Stem Cells and PRP for voiding dysfunction, especially urinary incontinence, have been evaluated with several clinical trials demonstrating their amazing potential to restore function via direct effects on the underlying mechanisms that lead to incontinence and/or voiding the dysfunction.
